The SAS (short for Special Air Service) is the anti-personnel and vehicle specialist infantry of the Chimera.[1]

Gameplay[]

The SAS encompasses multiple roles, able to take out both enemy infantry, and, with an upgrade, does great damage to enemy vehicles as well.

Its overall versatility cannot be overstated. For the cost of multiple units, the SAS only takes one spot, but acts in place of several equivalents and can at times fight enemy snipers heads-on. This is useful in early and mid game, to deter assaults of weaker enemy vehicles, prevent helicopters from doing too much damage and pick off infantry from long range before they can get close, something specialized units often fail to do. Lacking missiles, their attacks cannot be negated by enemy countermeasures either. SAS works wonders when backed by the Chimera's healing units, such as Prison's nanohealing that can reach anywhere, or a Medical Namer, both of which can greatly improve their survivability. Since they only take credits to produce and are relatively cheap for what they do, SAS can apply lots of pressure in the early game and help to secure Banks. With DU Rounds, they can even deal serious damage to heavier enemy vehicles while destroying less armored ones outright.

However, the SAS has a couple of major downsides, primarily low speed and long production time, as well as the high cost, since more often than not at least two are required to be borderline effective. Its range and rate of fire also leave a little more to be desired. Being a sniper unit that relies on ballistic weapons, it cannot exploit range-associated upgrades that typically benefit missile-firing units, requiring a clear line of sight to fire. This reduces their ability to exploit districts for cover, and whenever if they could get a clear shot, they are likely vulnerable. Furthermore, while they are much more effective at engaging helicopters than their anti-air equivalents, they are unable to target fixed-wing aircraft, forcing Chimera to rely on vehicles for this purpose. SAS tend to therefore rely heavily on friendly support, keeping enemies occupied while they take down threats one by one.
