“Just give me something to destroy!”
— Guardian

The Guardian is the primary attack helicopter of the United States Army.

Gameplay[]

Guardians are the best equipped helicopters of their faction. They have moderate health, an auto cannon to defend themselves, and ATGMs for ground vehicles. Upgrades improve it with flares, NLOS missile guidance and rocket pods specialized against structures.

As an attack helicopter, the Guardian's main appeal are its ATGMs, which are able to devastate enemy ground vehicles easily and can be fired from a distance, possibly before the enemy could get into engagement range, especially against dangerous anti-air vehicles like the Blazer, Pantsir and Otomatic. When upgraded with NLOS, these missiles not only inflict more damage but also gain range and indirect fire, allowing them to hit targets outside of the Guardian's sighting range with the assistance of other friendly units. In armored pushes, Guardians can pick off anti-armor vehicles with one missile or two, and several can cause some serious trouble by repeatedly chipping fragile enemy buildings. Having access to flares and an auto cannon, it is far from completely defenseless against infantry that its missiles struggle to even scratch. The hydra rockets come much later, turning the Guardian into a better attacker against entrenched infantry and other types of enemy buildings.

With its specialty in air to ground support, the Guardian has a couple of problems that hinder its usage. The missiles are slow to fire, and in general have a long travel time, making them vulnerable to any unit that intercepts missiles. Though their auto cannon is not entirely useless and can damage infantry, it does not fare well when they are within buildings, as the missiles could barely scratch them, and it must get within their range to be effective with its rocket pods, which don't reload fast enough to have any impact. Infantry that can target helicopters in particular like Grinch, SAS and Stinger are all common counters. Turrets and Air Superiority Fighters (Berkut/PAK FA/F-22 Raptor) can also easily take it out, meaning the use of Guardians outside of friendly airspace must be carefully weighted against its actual effectiveness. Still, with their utility, Guardians pack a good punch of their own.
